SALT LAKE CITY — A number of local businesses are offering to host food drives to collect donations for those who have been impacted by the government shutdown.
Helen Wade, owner of The Stockist in Salt Lake City’s 9th and 9th neighborhood, heard the Utah Food Bank’s desperate plea for donations to help everyone who’s not getting a paycheck or missing out on their federal food assistance because of the shutdown.
She decided to find a way to help.
“We see all these news headlines, and it’s like, what can we do? We don’t have a lot of money to give, but we have our shops that could, like, host the food drives. We have a place that people can come and donate.”
So she and some of the other local businesses in the area of 9th and 9th agreed to host food donation bins in their shops.
“We have a great clientele and community that shops with us that have the same mindset that they want to help.”
Wade said they’re even contemplating offering store incentives for those who donate. And they’re not the only ones. We’re hearing of other local businesses and restaurants stepping up to help in the same way. If you want to host a food drive to help during the government shutdown, you can sign up with the Utah Food Bank.
“It’s really important right now, this time, to really support your neighbors,” Wade said. “Hopefully, we can help fill the need or fill the gap that the food bank is feeling and that the families that need assistance are feeling.”
