A 8-metre juvenile whale, found wrapped in netting near Coledale beach, is believed to have drowned after becoming entangled while migrating south to Antarctica. Of 14 whales entangled in shark nets along Queensland and New South Wales this year, it is the first whale confirmed to have died. The death has reignited long-standing calls for the government to end its shark mesh net program aimed at protecting swimmers, which currently deploys nets at 51 beaches between Newcastle and Wollongong
